The roast
John has spent the last month grinding out fifty posts for an engagement rate that wouldn’t even get a participation nod from a LinkedIn bot. He claims to move the needle on $50M in spend, but he can’t even move the needle on his own follower count.
About John
I buy media for DTC and e-commerce brands on Meta and Google. That's been my job for the past 10+ years, managing over $50M in ad spend across dozens of brands. Most of my time goes into the stuff that actually moves the needle - creative strategy, measurement architecture, and making sure the numbers in the ad platform match the numbers in the P&L. I care a lot about unit economics and tend to be the person in the room asking whether a "winning" campaign is actually profitable. Right now I'm a Senior Media Buyer at eCom Ads, a Netherlands-based agency focused on DTC brands. I work across Meta Ads and Google Ads for clients ranging from early-stage eCom to brands doing $20M+. I handle strategy, creative direction, reporting, and the conversations with founders where we decide what to scale and what to kill. Before the agency, I spent years running my own campaigns - freelance PPC, my own e-commerce brands, and consulting for businesses across Europe. That operator experience shapes how I think about spend: every euro should earn its place. I write about Meta & Google Ads, creative strategy, and measurement on LinkedIn. Working on launching a YouTube channel and Substack at JohnParvu.com. Based in Romania. Originally from Bucharest.

When an ad finally works, the reflex is to take one path with it and leave three on the table. New proof. New format. New speaker. New context. You probably run one and ignore the rest. Same angle, new proof. The message stays, the evidence changes. A stat becomes a testimonial becomes a demo becomes a before-and-after. One promise, four different reasons to believe it. Same proof, new format. The winning idea moves from static to UGC to a founder talking to camera to a carousel. The people the first format never reached meet the message in the one that fits how they scroll. Same objection

Timex just bought 100% of Daniel Wellington, the brand that went zero to $228M seeding watches to Instagram influencers, then hit three straight years of losses. It is the most copied DTC growth story of the 2010s, and the most misunderstood. Filip Tysander bootstrapped it from a few thousand dollars, no VC. The engine: send a cheap minimalist watch to thousands of small Instagram accounts, give each a discount code, run a hashtag contest. By 2015 it was reportedly moving over a million watches a year at about 50% margins with almost no ad spend. Then it cracked. Net profit fell in 2017, dro

500 marketing leaders told a consultancy they know brand building drives growth. Then admitted they're cutting it anyway. Not because they're wrong about the growth. Because only about a quarter of them feel they have real influence in the room, and short-term performance is what wins the next internal argument. So they defund the long-term thing to survive the short-term one. Believe the behavior, not the belief. It's the cleanest version of a pattern that ran through the whole stretch of news: the pull to look good by the next board meeting quietly beating the discipline to build what sti
