Being proactive with referrals is the most underrated sales opportunity right now. It's really, really, really hard to get someone to respond to a cold message. Whether or not you are using AI, everyone thinks it's an AI generated message and so I think replies are down across the board on cold outreach. So now, you need to rely more on people you know to make intros. But most people are really busy and aren't constantly thinking about ways they can help you. So you need to make it easy for them. The only business development top of funnel metric I track is "meetings with valuable people." If I hit 5 every week, that is a success. 5 every week over 52 weeks in the year is 260 meetings. There is a 100% chance of success in growing a business when you intentionally meet with 260+ people in a calendar year. Some of the other metrics out there can be so confusing and useless. I like keeping it simple and trusting the long game and knowing good things will happen if I do this.
