The roast
Jason Widup’s career is a 20-year sprint to prove he can build an engine for any company except his own. He markets himself as a fractional CMO for startups, which is just professional code for a guy who gets paid to tell people the ship is sinking before he jumps off.
About Jason
I've spent 20 years building B2B marketing engines - from owning operations at Tableau, to growing Metadata from $1M to over $16M in ARR, to helping a pre-revenue startup hit $1.7M in revenue in 4 months, and driving 200%+ growth for another. Now I do two things:Fractional CMO — I step in as the marketing leader for B2B tech startups that need senior marketing horsepower without the full-time hire. Demand gen, GTM strategy, team building, analytics — the full scope. 10+ startups and counting.Marketing Leadership Development — I work directly with marketing leaders who are stuck at a ceiling, burning out, or trying to figure out how to earn the trust of their CEO. It's a 12-week program that combines the tactical side (demand gen, data mastery, sales alignment) with something most programs ignore: your health, mindset, and sustainability as a leader. My background: AT&T → consulting/analytics → big agencies → Microsoft → VP Data Science → Getty Images → Tableau → Workfront → VP Marketing @ Metadata → CMO @ Pixis → Fractional CMO for 10+ startups.I'm a practitioner, not a theorist. I still run campaigns, configure HubSpot, build workflows in Clay, and get my hands dirty.Want to talk? Visit my website with the button above to book time.

GTM Engineers aren't the answer. I've had a lot of CEOs ask me if they should just hire one thinking it will magically solve their problems. It won't. Here's my take. Most people tagging themselves as a GTM Engineer are primarily systems people. They've been in marketing or revops positions or even come from a light engineering background outside of marketing. And most of them don't have the marketing experience necessary to successfully run full campaigns across channels. Don't get me wrong - GTM Engineers are important roles that I prioritize - but they need to be paired with someone who

Where are my UK marketers at? I'm helping my client, Modulr, hire for several roles: Head of Marketing, Sr. Events Manager, Senior Product Marketing Manager, and a Marketing Analyst! I've been working with the team for almost two months now and the people and product are top notch. We're rebuilding some foundations in marketing to help spur on the next wave of growth. These are in-person roles (4 days/week) in the London area. If you're interested, let me know. If you have UK marketers in your network, please share this with them! I'll add the link to the careers page in the comments.

My new coaching program is definitely not for every marketing leader - and I’ve learned that through my first set of calls. Here’s what I’ve found. It’s hard to seek help with your marketing career. It’s also hard to seek help with your health and wellbeing. It’s very difficult to seek help for both at the same time. I’m finding that a lot of people aren’t quite ready for both. But in my experience when you address both of these simultaneously, the improvement is multiplied. The progress you can make in your marketing career is boosted by attending to your heath and wellness. You have more c
