The roast
Jarod says luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity, yet he spent five years at Gartner just to learn how to summarize a PDF. He is the Chief Marketing Officer at Vivun, which is a perfect title for a guy whose entire career is just reading other people’s footnotes.
About Jarod
I believe that luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity. I began my professional career as a contact center representative at Gartner, the largest IT research and consulting firm in the world. I spent a year reading white papers, attending webinars and shadowing calls to put myself in a position to work in research services, where I worked directly with analysts to triage customer inquiries. This is where I found my calling: helping people solve problems by connecting them to information. I value subject matter, and love “connecting the disconnected” through context-specific similes, metaphors, and stories. Between 2006 and 2011, I worked my way from a Research Associate to Research Analyst, and ultimately being promoted to a Research Director in 2014. Through that time the I remainder focused on helping people become the best versions of themselves by connecting them to the information necessary to solve their most pressing challenges. In 2014, I left Gartner for Cherwell Software, where led global Product Marketing, driving our go-to-market strategy with responsibilities for messaging, positioning, analyst relations, thought leadership, evangelism, product launch and sales enablement functions, and working closely with Demand Generation to increase awareness through compelling integrated campaigns, Product Management to build a world class Service Management solution, and Sales Enablement to improve sales confidence and win rates. Our efforts grew annual recurring revenue significantly, improved our positioning to secure critical competitive wins and accelerated sales cycles. Leadership through this growth stage yielded $50 million investment from KKR, a global investment firm, through their Next Generation Technology Fund. In 2018 I joined Apptio to lead global Product Marketing and develop and execute a product portfolio strategy with responsibilities messaging, positioning, pricing and packaging; working alongside campaigns, sales enablement and customer success teams to create demand, improve conversion, and drive renewals and up-sell. Our efforts have lead to the launch of new products and increased revenues. Leadership through this stage played a role in the acquisition of Apptio by Vista Equity Partners for $1.94 billion. Through it all, I am most proud of being Maya’s husband and Corinne and Dominique’s father. We give, love and serve with no expectation of a return.

Bottom Line Up Front: Where is your build-vs.-buy line today? What has to be true before you're willing to buy software instead of building it yourself? The biggest change AI has created isn't just how software gets built, it's how software gets evaluated. At this moment in time, it's never been easier to build exactly what you want, and at the same time, it will never be this hard to build something ever again. Need to automate a workflow? Build it. Need to connect a handful of APIs? Build it. Need an internal tool for your team? Build it. The barriers have collapsed, and that fundamental

Winning isn’t about the most talented team. Or the team with the best marketing. Or the biggest fan base. Or the team that can call in a special favor. Those things might help for a moment. They don’t sustain success. Winning teams do the little things well, over and over again. They communicate. They prepare. They hold each other accountable. They trust one another. They solve problems instead of assigning blame. They put the mission ahead of themselves. That’s what separates teams that have a good season from teams that build something lasting. In the end, culture outlasts hype
